Archeological Dig

Excavating is such a sorrow.
We don’t acknowledge it,
even as we celebrate the dig.
To uncover deaths, lives
that were put to sleep eons ago
to unrest their rest, to publicize
lives whose owners who cannot give
permission.
Our alibis are empty, and
I do not understand.

  1. Some ethnic groups have been successful in stopping such unearthings. Others, such as the unearthing of the remains of Richard III in a development parking lot, are done by mistake. I’m curious if a specific incident prompted your poem.
